CRR Needs Your Help with the Scholarship Run

Michael Mann
Tom Ray
This year’s Queens Lake 5K Run at New Quarter Park will again be organized solely by the Colonial Road Runners, and 100% of the proceeds, after race expenses, will go to the Colonial Road Runners Scholarship Fund. The CRR Scholarship Fund donations will be in memory of Michael Mann and Tom Ray, the two members of the Virginia Peninsula Road Racing Hall of Fame who are no longer with us.

Since the Colonial Road Runners are organizing this year’s Queens Lake 5K event by itself, and not in conjunction with an outside charitable organization, there is a lot more work that needs to be done, well

All of the members of the CRR, as well as other Williamsburg area runners, can help out the Scholarship Fund cause in the following ways:

1)      Enter the race – It’s a great, scenic, fast, mostly flat and certified out-and-back course (with a loop of Copse Way within the beautiful Queens Lake neighborhood). Many run their fastest times of the year on this course, especially since the race falls during one of the cooler months. Entry details below.
2)      Make a donation through the race towards the Colonial Road Runners Scholarship Fund – If you’re entering the race, there’s a line where you can make an additional donation to the CRR Scholarship Fund. If you can’t run the race, consider making a donation anyway through the race entry form.
3)      Volunteer for the race – There are a number of areas for which volunteers will be needed, either pre-race, early race morning, or during the race. There are some jobs that can be done, and still allow running in the 5K. Some of these jobs will be as a coordinator, other jobs will just be performing one task on race day. Below are some of the areas where help is needed. Please check off as desired, and email your areas of volunteering to Rick Platt at rickplatt1@juno.com (phone numbers 757-229-7375 or cell 757-345-1431)

______ Race Sponsor – If you are a business, or would like to make a personal sponsorship for the race, contact Rick Platt for specific details. Sponsors at specific levels will get their logos on the back of the race T-shirts, as well as be recognized in signage race day, as well as at the awards ceremony.

______ Race sponsorship or door prize solicitation—As an individual, you could solicit 1 or 2 race sponsorships or door prizes from businesses you know. Contact Rick Platt for details.

______ Coordinators for specific jobs on race day, specifically
______ Registration coordinator (race day, at pavilion, including pre-registered runners packet pickup, race day registration, and T-shirt distribution,
_______T-shirt coordinator (pick up T-shirts from Colonial Sports Screenprinting, sort by count for pre-registered runners, and bring to race)
______ Water Stop Coordinator (set up water stop table, and coordinate volunteers for that table),                  ______ Refreshments Coordinator (pick up the fruit, drink, etc. for post-race refreshments, bring to race, and set up for post-race),
______ Parking Coordinator  (in conjunction with Molly Nealer of York County Parks and Recreation, coordinate the 4 volunteers needed for parking control before the race, starting at 7:30 a.m.,
______ Signage Coordinator (graphic design help with producing race signage for registration, sponsors, course, etc.),
______Volunteer Coordinator (hand out volunteer T-shirts and assignments race morning).
_______Queens Lake Neighborhood Notification (distribute race flyers and neighborhood advisory to selected Queens Lake residents on Copse Way, East Queens Drive, Sherwood, and Allendale)

______ Regular race-day volunteers, including:
______ race marshals (6 or more total),
 ______ split timers (2 total),
______ water stop helpers (3 total),
______ race day registration and T-shirt/packet pickup (minimum 4), and
 ______ parking (4 total).

______ CRR Finish Line Crew (if desired, the regulars on the CRR finish line crew could double up, and help with other areas, both pre-race, and early race morning (registration, parking control), before the 1 mile fun run starts).

Many of the other major areas for the race have already been taken care of, including:

Race Entry Form – Stan Rockwell and Rick Platt
Race bib numbers, race awards, race flyer distribution, race sponsorships and data entry – Rick Platt
Race Permits – Bob Walker
Bike Leader – Mike McDonald
Race Course Setup and Course Marshals - Andrew D'Amico
Race T-shirts and Colonial Sports sponsorship – Geri Elder
Race volunteers on the course – William and Mary Running Club (Jessica Armstrong, coordinator)

Michael Mann and Tom Ray are the two members of the Virginia Peninsula Road Racing Hall of Fame who are no longer with us—Michael Mann (2006 inaugural inductee class to the VPRRHoF) and Tom Ray (2007 inductee class).

Michael Mann, who died in September, 2007 at age 38 after a 2½-year battle with lung cancer, was a three-time winner of the Colonial Road Runners Grand Prix (2002-04). His PRs ranged from 15:18 (5K), 24:58 (8K) and 31:20 (10K) up to 1:09:16 for the half marathon and 2:28:28 for his favorite race, the 2004 Shamrock Marathon. He still holds four CRR race course records.

Tom Ray, who died in June, 2011 at age 78, still holds the all-time CRR record for men 65-69, a 20:02 at age 67 at the 2000 Vineyards of Williamsburg 5K, and the Virginia state 10-mile record for men 70-74 with a 1:13:55 at the 2003 Yorktown Battlefield 10 Miler. The Colonial Road Runners Scholarship Fund is in memory of these two talented runners and never-to-be-forgotten friends.
