Jamestown 4-H 10K Run

Course: A beautiful, historic, scenic, varied and almost totally flat course combining three of the Williamsburg area’s finest trails—the Virginia Capital Trail, the Powhatan Creek Trail and the Greensprings Trail. The 10K will start and finish at the Jamestown 4-H Center, at the end of the 4-H Club entrance road. The course is entirely paved (with a few scenic wooden bridges) except for a one-mile stretch on the well-maintained crushed-stone Greensprings Trail, and the hard-packed dirt 4-H Club Road start and finish.

After .4 miles on the 4-H Club Road , the course crosses Greensprings Road to get onto the Virginia Capital Trail (a wide, multi-recreational path which goes from Jamestown to Richmond ). A short distance down the trail there will be several Virginia Historical Markers for historic sites that the course will pass through:

Governor’s Land—Originally a 3,000-acre tract between the James River and Powhatan Creek, set aside by the Virginia Company of London in 1618.
Mainland Farm—the oldest continuously cultivated farm in America .
The Battle of Green Spring—The July 6, 1781 Revolutionary War battle between Marquis de Lafayette and Brigadier General “Mad” Anthony Wayne of the American forces against Cornwallis and Tarleton of the British.

Around the one-mile point, the course takes a right turn onto the asphalt Powhatan Creek Trail for an out-and-back section on the flat and open portion of the trail, then on the return route takes a right turn to enter the Greensprings Trail, a one-mile section of a well-maintained, crushed-stone path through beautiful woods, marshes and wetlands. A mile later, at the exit of the Greensprings Trail, there is the only significant elevation change on the fast and flat 10K course, a short hill coming up to the trailhead of the Greensprings Trail. The course will then proceed down Eagle Way , the road next to Jamestown High School , and take a left onto the bike path connecting the high school to the Virginia Capital Trail, where it will go right for a ½-mile out-and-back stretch before a turnaround point before Greensprings Road .
The final two miles of the 10K will return on the Virginia Capital Trail to a crossing of Greensprings Road and a final .4-mile sprint down the hard-packed dirt Jamestown 4-H Club entrance road to the finish line at the camp headquarters and a great post-race party, musical entertainment, and awards ceremony on a bluff overlooking the James River.

Registration: Pre-registration will be $30 for the race. Race day registration $35. Fun run pre-registration is $15, race day $20.
