Recovery Rocks at York River State Park

By Rick Platt

Both race winners broke York River State Park Recovery Rocks 5K race age-group records Saturday morning in Williamsburg, as did the women’s race walk winner, in the 11th Colonial Road Runners Grand Prix race of 2013. The 3.1-mile course started with an uphill mile on the park entrance road, then had two miles of grass and dirt trails before finishing by the park’s Visitor Center.

Adam Otstot, 31, of Williamsburg, a physical education teacher at Rawls Byrd Elementary School and a professional triathlete, won the men’s 5K by just over a minute with a time of 16:24, bettering the previous men’s 30-34 mark of 16:48 by Bruton High School cross country and track coach Mark Tompkins (2009).  Todd Kessler, 30, of Newport News, the Smithfield High School cross country and track coach, and the 2011 CRR Grand Prix men’s champion, was second in 17:27, with John Piggott, 48, of Williamsburg, the Lafayette High School assistant cross country and track coach, third in 17:45. Warhill High School’s Christopher Short, 16, of Toano was fourth overall in 17:53, with Jamestown High School’s Daniel McKay-Roberts, 18, of Williamsburg fifth in 18:00.

For the 2013 CRR Grand Prix, with 9 races remaining in the 20-race series, Piggott (77 points) leads over Kessler (62) and 2012 CRR Grand Prix champion Greg Dawson (51).

For the women Mercedes Castillo-D’Amico, 55, of Newport News demolished the previous women’s 55-59 race age-group record of 24:24 by Carol Talley with a time of 20:30, to win by 21 seconds over Debbie McLaughlin, 47, of Williamsburg (20:51), with William and Mary graduate student Emily Honeycutt, 22, of West Point, third in 21:34. Earlier this year Castillo-D’Amico broke her own Virginia state 5K record for women 55-59 with a time of 20:01 at the Walsingham Academy 5K Run. Jamestown High School sophomore Gaphne Glueck, 15, of Williamsburg, was fourth for the women in 22:41.

The top three in the 2013 CRR Grand Prix are the same as the top three Saturday at York River State Park, with McLaughlin leading with 77 points, followed by Castillo-D’Amico (63) and Honeycutt (59).

The third York River State Park 5K race record broken was by women’s race walk winner Amber Horner, 15, of Williamsburg, a Jamestown High School student, with an excellent time of 33:32, almost three minutes better than the previous mark of 36:22 by Emily Douglas, 12, of Williamsburg in 2008. Both are coached in race walking by Walsingham Academy cross country and track coach Rich Higgins of Wiliamsburg, who was third for the men Saturday in the race walk (34:18), trailing just Tom Gerhardt of Chesapeake (30:47) and Scott Stakes of Portsmouth (31:31).

The 5K was jointly organized by Spirit Works Foundation (“Center for Recovery of the Soul”) and by the Colonial Road Runners competitive team members.
