Andrew Goodstein, 23, of Williamsburg , a 2013 William and Mary graduate, broke the course record by 41 seconds Saturday at the third annual Powhatan Creek Trail 5K Run, starting and finishing at Clara Byrd Baker Elementary School in Williamsburg . The Colonial Road Runners Grand Prix event was previously known as the Sweatin’ for Scholarships 5K Run, and was switched from a Friday evening race to a Saturday morning race. Goodstein ran a time of 16:17 to erase the previous mark of 16:58 in 2012 by Kurtis Steck (a former Lafayette High School distance standout now on the W&M track team). Runner-up was CRR Grand Prix leader Victor Flemming, 35, of Carrollton , eight seconds behind in 16:25.

Goodstein and Flemming had previously met in April’s Run the D.O.G. Street 5K, where Goodstein was fifth overall in 15:53, and Flemming was ninth overall in 16:31. Third place Saturday was 2011 and 2013 CRR Grand Prix champion Todd Kessler, 31, of Newport News , in 17:48.

For the women Heather LaVallee, 20, of Denville , NJ , currently doing physics research at W&M, won in 20:46. LaVallee, a student at Brockport College (NY) has a 5K PR of 18:24, and plans on running a 5K race in all 50 states. Emily Honeycutt, 23, of West Point (a W&M Masters in education graduate soon to teach math at Jamestown High School ) was second in 21:38, and Percie Lyons, 17, of Kailua , HI (visiting relatives in the area) was third in 21:46.

Goodstein, Flemming, Kessler, LaVallee, Lyons all broke race age-group records, as did Ken Alberg, 53, of Suffolk (men 50-54, 19:01), Scott Stakes, 51, of Portsmouth (men’s race walk, 30:48), Frankie Riggs, 12, of Surry (women 14-and-under, 23:48), Jessica Burcham, 32, of Lanexa (women 30-34, 21:49), and Candice Michalik, 66, of Williamsburg (28:32).

Kathleen Lautzenheiser Wins Warhill 8K

11th Annual Warhill 8K Run (1st year as 8K, previously a 5K run)
WISC, Warhill Sports Complex, Williamsburg, Virginia
Saturday, June 14, 2014
A Colonial Road Runners Grand Prix Event
Information from Rick Platt (757-229-7375, rickplatt1@juno.com)

Most notable Saturday morning at the 11th annual Warhill 8K Run (formerly a 5K run, but changed to an 8K for 2014), is that, for the second time in Colonial Road Runners history, a female runner was the overall winner of a CRR Grand Prix race. Kathleen Lautzenheiser, 22, of Midlothian, who graduated last month from William and Mary, crossed the finish line in 30:31 for the 4.97-mile distance, just ahead of the men’s top three of Greg Dawson, 48 (30:57), Nicholas Weigund, 24 (31:05) and Martin Gallivan, 45 (31:15), all from Williamsburg.

Lautzenheiser had previously won April’s Run the D.O.G. Street 5K in a course record 17:43. The only other time a female was the first runner across the finish line of a CRR race was in 2006 when Aurora Scott, then 16, of Chesapeake won the Governor’s Land 5K Run in 16:37, 18 seconds ahead of Steve Chantry, then age 51, the first male finisher.

The race was organized by, and benefited, the Virginia Legacy Soccer Club Scholarship. The course was a combination of a gravel service road around the Warhill soccer fields, the 3.6-mile Warhill Nature Trail, and an out-and-back to Longhill Road up the bike path, and back the park entrance road, with the finish line at WISC (Williamsburg Indoor Sports Complex)
