Yorktown Victory Run 2013

By Rick Platt

Williamsburg's John Piggott, 47, won for the second straight year at the 9th annual Yorktown Victory Run 8 Miler, on a scenic point-to-point course from Newport News Park, through the Yorktown Battlefield Tour Roads, and ending at the Yorktown Victory Monument. Piggott was timed in 46:50 (12 seconds slower than last year) to best 2011 Colonial Road Runners Grand Prix champion Todd Kessler, 30, of Newport News (47:25) and Ocean Lakes High School runner Daniel Read, 17, of Virginia Beach (47:43).

Nicole Park, one of the leading AAA high school runners in Virginia, set a women's 15-19 race record with her winning time of 54:49, besting six-time CRR Grand Prix champion Jennifer Quarles (55:10). Park, a junior at Ocean Lakes High, was second in the Virginia AAA state cross country championships in 2011, then seventh in 2012 at states. She also won the district and AAA regional cross country titles last fall. A multiple district and regional champion in indoor and outdoor track at the 1,600 and 3,200 meters, Park has track bests of 10:41 for 3,200 meters and 5:05 for 1,600 meters.

If you won an award at Saturday's Yorktown Victory Run 8 Miler, and could not stay around for the awards ceremony, all unclaimed race awards will be brought to the next Colonial Road Runners Grand Prix race, the Queens Lake 5K Run at New Quarter Park on Saturday, April 6th. Information for the Queens Lake 5K Run is on the CRR website, and entry forms can also be picked up at Colonial Sports, 513 Prince George Street, in Williamsburg.

Jamestown High School senior Andrew Richards had some tough competition, but pulled away at the end to win the men’s division of the 12th annual Jamestown Swamp Run 5K, held Saturday morning on a mostly trail course that started and finished at Jamestown High School, and included a loop of the scenic Greensprings Trail. Richards was timed in 16:23, just 12 seconds slower than the Swamp Run men’s 15-19 age-group record of 16:11 by former Jamestown High star Andrew Mearns. Rob Coslick, 30, of Chesapeake was runner-up in 16:36. Richards had placed seventh in last fall’s Bay Rivers District cross country championships, for which his Jamestown team placed second.

A minute back was a pack of four, all under 18 minutes, including Keith Schumann, 42, of Williamsburg (17:34) over 2012 Colonial Road Runners Grand Prix men’s champion Greg Dawson, 47, of Williamsburg (17:46), Jamestown High runner Chris Crowder, 17, of Williamsburg (17:52), and Jesse Berwald, 35, of Williamsburg (17:53).

For the women William and Mary senior Krissa Loretto, 21, of Toms River, NJ (19:37) won a close race over six-time CRR Grand Prix champion and recent inductee into the Virginia Peninsula Road Racing Hall of Fame Jennifer Quarles, 41, of Williamsburg (19:44). Jamestown High parent (of five) Connie Glueck, 48, of Williamsburg (20:51) held off two other CRR age-group standouts—Debbie McLaughlin, 47, of Williamsburg (20:54) and Karla Havens, 51, of Plainview (20:57).

Loretto last April had run a 19:06 at the Run the DOG (Street) 5K through Colonial Williamsburg. Quarles is the only runner to hold three different Jamestown Swamp Run age-group records, for women 30-34 (18:52 in 2006), women 35-39 (19:38 in 2007) and women 40-44 (19:31 in 2012). Havens broke the Swamp Run race record for women 50-54 with her 20:57, smashing the previous mark of 21:41 in 2009 by Mercedes Castillo-D’Amico of Newport News .

There were 179 finishers in the 5K run/walk.

Another State Road Racing Record for Mercedes

(Info provided by Rick Platt)

Congratulations to Mercedes Castillo-D'Amico, who set her second Virginia state record yesterday at the Fort Eustis 10K, running a 41:53 to break the previous women's 55-59 state record of 42:38 by Barbara Mathewson in 2005, and to also win the overall women's title in the Fort Eustis 10K race.

Mercedes also owns the Virginia state 5K record of 20:23, set at the Sentara Sleighbell 5K Run on December 15, 2012 with a time of 20:12 breaking the old record of 20:49 by Susie Klutz, age 59, March 16, 1996.
