Rainy Recovery Rocks Results

Women's winner Karen Terry, 23, of Newport News extended her lead in the Colonial Road Runners Grand Prix with her win this morning at the York River State Park Recovery Rocks 5K Run. Terry, the YRSP 5K defending champion, bettered her winning time from 2011 (19:35) by six seconds with her race age-group record (women 20-24) of 19:29. Other age-group records were broken by Mercedes Castillo-D'Amico (women 50-54), Carol Talley (women 55-59), Louise Sharer (women 60-64) and Pat Eden (women 80-and-over).

Castillo-D'Amico, 54, also of Newport News, was runnerup for the women with a time of 20:51.

For the men, Greg Dawson, 46, of Williamsburg, won his first Colonial Road Runners Grand Prix race ever with a time of 18:00. Steve Chantry, 57, of Williamsburg, was runnerup in 18:17, while 2011 CRR Grand Prix champion Todd Kessler, 29, of Newport News was third overall in 18:36.

For the CRR Grand Prix this year, after 11 races, the top four women are Karen Terry (68), Mercedes Castillo-D'Amico (57), Jennifer Quarles (55) and Connie Glueck (52). For the men, the top three are Daniel Shaye (67), Greg Dawson (64) and Todd Kessler (62).

The weather was relatively cool, with temperatures in the lower 70s. There was heavier rain before and after the race, which cut down on the attendance (71 entrants, 64 finishers), but a window of opportunity occurred for the 5K itself, with little rain during the event, but the road and trail course was wet and slippery at times.
